Ever since I met Ariel Wyner last February at Song Leader Boot Camp (SLBC), I knew I wanted to bring him to Ohr Shalom. Actually, I met him on the bus that was taking us from the airport in St Louis to the St Louis JCC where a few days of heaven awaited us at SLBC…the best in contemporary Jewish Music—the here and now of this amazing renaissance of Jewish musical creativity. A re-awakening of American Jewish cultural consciousness—happening now, in our own time. And right there and then on the bus I had a sense that Ariel was going to be a good fit for our shul.
I was right—Ariel, who directs Jacob’s Ladder, is a composer, arranger, producer, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and co-founder of Jacob's Ladder. His musical works have pushed the boundaries of Jewish music, bluegrass, folk, rock, and American roots music, all stemming from his strong foundation of classical training. The son of a rabbi and graduate of Berklee College of Music, Ariel serves as director of musical engagement and hazzan at Kehillath Israel in Brookline, MA. The main emphasis of his work, as Ariel likes to say, is “Director of Spiritual Engagement through Jewish Music.”
Ariel Wyner
Bandleader of Jacob’s Ladder
Jacob’s Ladder also includes:
Sofía Chiarandini—music educator and performer.
A fiddler and singer with a vast repertoire of traditional American and Jewish music;
G Rockwell—banjoist, guitarist, mandolinist, vocalist and composer.
G brings a progressive edge to his American Roots music, fusing his bluegrass background with influences of bebop, gypsy jazz, and swing; and
Nate Sabat—award-winning bassist, singer-songwriter, arranger, and instructor based in Brooklyn, NY
You will hear a three-piece band at our first MUSICAL Happy Holy Hour, Friday 5:30 to 6:00 p.m., followed by Kabbalat Shabbat services, 6:00 to 7:00, followed by a communal Shabbat dinner. The trio will also be participating in Shabbat services on Saturday morning.
Saturday evening we have a cocktail/hors d'oeuvres hour followed by a concert with a four-piece band.
And Sunday morning, Ariel himself will work with the entire JLC, followed by a family concert featuring our students from pre-K to seventh grade and our teen helpers as well.
All of the RSVP information (we LOVE your RSVPs asap ) can be found here.
Our Artist in Residence Weekend would not be possible without the generous sponsorship of our donors—Ruth and Bruce Bier, Judi and Matt Sills, and Andrea Schweber in memory of Mark Schweber.
