JEWISH LEARNING CENTER
Jewish Learning Center (K to 12th grades)

The Jewish Learning Center (JLC) of Congregation Ohr Shalom is open to children in grades K-12. This is our Hebrew or Religious School. Jewish education today has the power to change lives and to change the world, and our COS-SJCC JLC is part of that amazing story. We hope you will join us to be a part of it as well! The wisdom, values, and tradition that we impart to our learners empowers them not just to be a part of this story, but to be critical in determining how this story turns out.
We engage our students in conversations that are critical for children's intellectual and emotional growth. We engage our students through a strong sense of commitment to cultivate a deep connection to Hebrew language, Jewish culture, Jewish heritage, encouraging wonder, and engaging their spirit with hands-on learning, Hebrew prayer, Jewish music, and stories deeply rooted in our heritage. Students of all backgrounds, cultures, and gender identities are welcome.
Our K-2 students meet on Sundays only. From 3rd grade on, our students come on Wednesdays as well. Some choose to have individualized reading lessons via Zoom in addition.
All b’nai mitzvah students are taught individually by our Rabbi and Cantor starting approximately 12 months prior to the "big day." Those lessons are in addition to the regular JLC classes.
At the end of 10th grade, we celebrate with our students as they become confirmed. All confirmands are then invited to join the staff of the JLC as classroom and office aides (these are PAID positions only open to those who have completed the confirmation!). It is not unusual for the JLC to have 12th-graders on staff who met as preschoolers in our ELC.
In 2022, for the first time in a long time, we welcomed a new member to our Ohr Shalom educational team, when Meredith Lubin became the director of education and the JLC. We are looking forward to all the creativity and innovation she brings to the position.
We welcome your family to our community and look forward to becoming your partner in creating strong Jewish roots. Learn more about the COS-SJCC Jewish Learning Center here.
