Rabbi: Avi Friedman came to the SJCC in 2005. A native of Detroit, Rabbi Friedman completed his undergraduate work at the University of Michigan in 1991, received a Master of Hebrew Letters in May 1993 from the University of Judaism, Los Angeles California and was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, New York in 1997.

Prior to coming to the SJCC, Rabbi Friedman served as Assistant Rabbi at the Ahavath Achim Congregation in Atlanta Georgia., and as Senior Rabbi at the Tree of Life Congregation, a progressive 550-member Conservative congregation in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Rabbi Friedman has also been an instructor at a number of community high schools, as well as at the Florence Melton Adult Mini-School in Pittsburgh.

Rabbi Friedman and his wife, Jodi, are proud parents to Gabi, Jonah and Jessica.

Cantor: Janet Roth Krupnick
came to the congregation in 1990. Since her arrival, the quality and variety of the musical experience, both during services, and on special occasions, has increased significantly. Cantor Krupnick participates in all aspects of congregational life including conducting services, directing both the adult and children’s choirs, teaching adult education as well as in the religious school and preparing children for bar/bat mitzvah. She continues to create artistic and musical programs that explore the vast range of the Jewish cultural experience. Keen on congregational participation during services and cultural programming, she has organized a Torah chanting and davening program that encourages the knowledge and mastery of Jewish liturgical skills.

Cantor Krupnick received her undergraduate degree in Middle Eastern Languages and Literature from the University of Indiana at Bloomington, a Master of Arts in Music from North Texas State University and a degree in Sacred Music with the Diploma of Hazzan from the Jewish Theological Seminary of America in New York.

Cantor Krupnick is married to Rabbi Moss Krupnick and is the mother of two daughters, Abigail, and Madaket.

Rabbi Emeritus: William B. Horn has been with the congregation since 1962. He has a Bachelor of Science degree from NYU, a Master of Science degree in Counseling and Psychology from Yeshiva University, and rabbinical ordination, a graduate degree in Hebrew literature and an honorary Doctor of Divinity from the Jewish Theological Seminary. In addition, Rabbi Horn has studied at the Institute for Analytic Psychotherapy and the Post Graduate Center for Mental Health.

He serves as chaplain for the Summit Police Department and at Overlook Hospital in Summit. He is a former lecturer in Practical Rabbinics and Homiletics at the Jewish Theological Seminary and has held various posts in United Synagogue and in the Rabbinical Assembly. He is former President of the Summit Ministerial Association and has served on the Board of Trustees of the Solomon Schechter Day School of Union and Essex Counties.

Rabbi Horn is married to the former Dena Mendelowitz, former principal of the elementary division of the Solomon Schechter School of New Jersey. Currently she is the Director of Synagogue Services for the JEA of Metrowest.

They have three children.

Hadassah, wife of Rabbi Randy Marks of the Shomrei Torah Congregation in Wayne, NJ., is a specialist in early childhood education. The first graduate of the Solomon Schechter day school to receive an MA at the Jewish Theological Seminary and return to SSDS as a teacher, she now teaches nursery school at the synagogue in Cedar Grove, NJ. Hadassah and Randy have four children: Avi, Penina, Raffi and Danit.

Moshe is an attorney in a New York City law firm. Moshe and his wife Leslie have one daughter, Ayelet.

Ora, married to Rabbi Joseph Prouser, rabbi of the Little Neck Jewish Center, is Dean of the Academy for Jewish Religion. Ora and Joseph have three children: Shira, Eitan and Ayel.


sqalef.gif (1080 bytes)Director of Religious Education: Stacey S. David has responsibility for the entire educational program from Kindergarten through the Post Graduate classes. She has a faculty of 13 full-time and part-time instructors. Ms. David holds an undergraduate degree in Hebrew Studies, with a minor in Elementary Education, and Masters degrees in Elementary and Early Childhood Education from CUNY at Hunter. She spent three years studying in Israel , has a yeshiva background, and is fluent in Hebrew.


Early Childhood Director: Barbara Rich is the director of our nursery-school, supervising our program for children 16 months through 6 years old and a staff of ten head and assistant teachers. Ms. Rich received a BA in Early Childhood Education from Brooklyn College and an MA in Supervision in Early Childhood from Kean College. Ms. Rich served as the Director of the nursery school at Congregation Ahavas Achim B’nai Jacob and David in West Orange for seven years before joining the SJCC Nursery School. She is a member of NAEYC and the Directors Network of the JEA.


Administrator: Judy Weil received her undergraduate degree in Mathematics and Classical Civilization at Syracuse University and her MBA in Marketing and International Business at Fordham University. She is currently enrolled in the second year of the Florence Melton Adult School, sponsored through Hebrew University.

Before joining the SJCC staff, she managed the publicity departments of the Trade Book Division for both Simon & Schuster and CBS Publishing and was the Office Manager / Account Exec/Bookkeeper for Media Marketing.

She has been very active in the Conservative movement and synagogue life. She has served her synagogue, Shomrei Torah, in Wayne, NJ, on the Ritual, Koach, Mitzvah Corps, Education, Finance, Personnel and Adult Education committees as well as Financial Secretary, Recording Secretary, Vice President and, ultimately, for four years as President of the Congregation.

She is a life member of Hadassah and serves on committees for the New Jersey Region of USCJ. She has also served as President of the Albert Einstein Chapter of B'nai Brith Women (currently known as Jewish Women International) and has been involved with Boy Scout Troop #165, the only Jewish Scout Troop in Passaic County, since 1994.

She and her husband Jay, an attorney in New York City, are extremely proud of their college-age sons Matthew and Gregory, both of whom are Eagle Scouts.


President: Julie Schwarzwald and her husband Howard Bochner have been members of the SJCC for 15 years. Prior to being elected President, Julie served first as Chair of the Nursery School Committee, then as a Vice-President for 7 years. Julie is a General Studies teacher at the Solomon Schechter Day School of Essex and Union, Cranford Lower School. Julie and Howard have two sons who attend SSDS.
