SJCC Men's Club
The SJCC Men's Club provides a wonderful opportunity to interact on many
different levels with other members of the Synagogue community. Perhaps our
proudest achievement is our spiritual contribution. Each year we sponsor a
Men's Club Shabbat, during which the members of the Men's Club conduct all
parts of the Friday night and Saturday services, including Torah readings.
Everyone is welcome to participate. We also build the sukkah each year and play
an important role in the annual Purim carnival with our popular make your own
ice cream sundae booth.
On the cultural side, we have three Sunday breakfasts each year when, in
addition to having a wonderful spread of bagels, lox, and herring, we invite a
knowledgeable speaker to talk to us about a topic of contemporary interest.
Some of the subjects that have been covered in recent years include
bioterrorism, the Arab-Israeli conflict, and the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
Recent speakers have included noted financial guru Jim Cramer, and the mayors
of Summit, New Providence, and Berkeley Heights. These talks are always
thought-provoking and lead to some very lively discussions.
We also have made a commitment to community service and social action. Men's
Club runs a very successful blood drive annually with the Blood Center of New
Jersey. We provide transportation for people who are physically unable to come
to services on their own and provide behind-the-scenes support for many SJCC
functions.
Finally, the SJCC Men's Club is known for promoting enjoyable events and
friendship among the members. Whether it is our annual family picnic, Sunday
morning softball games, a sports night out or our new Casino Night, the
emphasis is on having a good time with our fellow congregants. We are dedicated
to promoting communal life at the SJCC in a warm and friendly environment where
everyone feels welcome. It is an ideal way to share our Jewish heritage and has
resulted in great lifelong friendships for many of us.
