SJCC Adult Education Program
"The advancement of learning is the highest commandment"
Maimonides
The SJCC Adult Education Program reflects our ongoing commitment to provide the opportunity for each member of our SJCC family to study and celebrate our evolving Jewish heritage
The SJCC adult education program is affiliated with
the Jewish Theological Seminary, with courses given for
our congregation at the seminary, as well as guest
lectures given by leading scholars from the JTS at our
facility.
The highlight of the SJCC adult education program is
the Wednesday night lecture series. Leading rabbinical
and JTS scholars as well as professors from Drew
University and other local colleges have discussed the
following subjects during the last two years: Maimonides
and Jewish theology, midrashic studies, Talmud, Biblical
studies, history of the Jewish people, history of Israel in
depth, understanding Islam and Islamic fundamentalism,
the media and Israel, and prayer.
Other notable features of the adult education
curriculum include
-
The Sunday Night Group that
meets monthly at the SJCC for review and discussion of
books relevant and of interest to the Jewish community.
-
A Sisterhood Bible Studies that meet on Tuesdays at
members' homes.
-
A course called Jewish Family Living
that focuses on Jewish ritual and custom in the home
and can lead to adult Bat Mitzvah meets once a month in
the SJCC library.
-
A basic Hebrew course that is offered
throughout the year for adults seeking to begin or
improve reading skills.
-
For those who wish to take
Hebrew reading to the next level, a
program under the guidance of Cantor Krupnick that
teaches congregants to read Torah.
Finally, the SJCC participates in an interfaith dialogue
with Faith Lutheran Church.
A brochure describing the program is published
twice a year.
